Political parties have been advised against selecting running mates based on their religious or ethnic background. The advice was given by the Sanahene of Sampa Traditional Area, Nana Okafo Agyei in an interview with Radio Ghana in Sunyani. He said capability and marketability should be the key factors to consider in choosing a running mate. Nana Okofo Agyei intimated that a careful observation of the political scene in Ghana seems to suggest that some parties are only interested in the religious and ethnic backgrounds of the running mates. He noted that if the trend is allowed to take root in the Ghanaian body politics, quality will be sacrificed on the altar of religion and ethnicity. Nana Okofo Agyei suggested to Nana Akufo Addo to select one of the 16 people who contested the in the race for presidential candidate of the party as his running mate.
