Convenor of the Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey, Kenneth Ashigbey, says visible efforts against illegal mining are being undermined by what he views as weak political commitment.
He acknowledged ongoing interventions but argued that outcomes do not match the scale of the problem.
“You see a lot of effort, a lot of action. Sometimes even those making the efforts are being thwarted,” he said on JoyNews monitored by MyNewsGh.
Ashigbey pointed to key policy proposals, including the permanent deployment of security personnel to hotspot areas, which he says have not been fully implemented.
“You would have thought that because of the urgency, funds would be released for deployment. How many of those permanent posts are functioning?” he asked.
He also questioned budgetary priorities, suggesting that financial allocations do not reflect the seriousness of the crisis.
“When you want to see commitment, look at how finances are used. Ask yourself if adequate funding has been given to deal with this,” he said.
According to him, the absence of measurable improvements raises concerns about whether current strategies are sufficient.
“The results are what matter. And the indicators do not show the level of change we need,” Ashigbey stated.
