'I did not insult anyone' — Owusu-Bempah dares NPP as National Council reviews petitions against him

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has escalated petitions seeking the removal of its Deputy Director of Communications, Ernest Owusu-Bempah, to the party’s National Council, the highest decision-making body between congresses.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, September 24, 2025, and signed by General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, the party confirmed that it had received multiple petitions from members challenging Mr. Owusu-Bempah’s continued stay in office. The statement emphasized that his appointment was made on the recommendation of the National Executive Committee (NEC) and approved by the National Council, which will now decide his fate.

“The leadership of the Party has observed, with grave concern, the conduct of Mr Ernest Owusu-Bempah, Deputy Director of Communications,” the statement read. “In line with due process, and considering that his appointment was made upon the recommendation of the NEC and subsequently approved by the National Council, the matter has been formally referred to the National Council for appropriate consideration and determination.”

The party reaffirmed its “unwavering commitment to upholding discipline, safeguarding its values, and ensuring that all matters are handled with fairness and transparency.”

Responding to the controversy in an interview on Okay FM, Mr. Owusu-Bempah insisted that he was being singled out because of his declared support for presidential hopeful Kennedy Ohene Agyapong. He maintained that his public remarks, particularly on illegal mining, were misrepresented.

“All the statements I have made have been about leadership. I said Kennedy Agyapong will deal with galamsey even if it involves his mother or sister. I did not insult anyone,” he explained.

He accused his detractors of selective attacks, suggesting that his alignment with Mr. Agyapong had made him a target. “Why am I the only one being attacked? The only reason is that I am the only national officer who has declared support for Kennedy Agyapong. If someone from Dr Bawumia's camp did the same, it would be treated lightly,” he argued.

While vowing to defend himself before the National Council, Mr. Owusu-Bempah doubled down on his loyalty to Mr. Agyapong. He also accused the NPP of lacking credibility on illegal mining. According to him, the party has no “moral right” to criticise the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government on the matter since the NPP had not performed any better while in office.
