In celebration of its 20th anniversary, the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has announced a significant enhancement to its health benefit coverage, now covering dialysis patients for a period of six months.
This expansion, revealed on June 1, 2024, will run to December 2024.
Under the new policy, patients under 18 and over 60 will receive all eight free dialysis sessions per month under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). Additionally, individuals aged 18 to 59 will be entitled to two dialysis sessions per month at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital, Ho Teaching Hospital and Tamale Teaching Hospital.
This initiative is part of the government’s broader commitment to developing sustainable solutions for renal treatment cost, which were previously not covered by the NHIS.
The NHIA stated that the funding for this expansion comes from a GH₵2 million allocation in the NHIA Formula specifically to support needy and vulnerable patients. An approved budget of GH₵2.4 million for corporate social responsibility initiatives will also be utilized to support this investment.
