John Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has criticized the Akufo-Addo administration, asserting that the six new regions created lack substantive development and are merely symbolic entities.

He expressed his concerns during a meeting with traditional authorities held at the Jakpa Palace.

Mahama, the former President, lamented that while it is easy to declare the establishment of a region, it is crucial for the region to have the necessary infrastructure and resources to qualify as a fully functional and developed entity.

“The six regions that were created were created just in name. The things that must exist so when you enter the region you will know this is a region are still not there," he remarked.

The NDC flagbearer solemnly pledged to prioritize the development of the newly created regions if elected, emphasizing that his government would ensure they have the essential elements needed to thrive as independent regions.

“I can assure you that not only for the Savannah region but all the six new ones; when the NDC comes into power, the things that you need to be called a region, we will make sure that you have them," Mahama assured.

During his address, Mahama also expressed disappointment in the government's decision to halt the Damongo Water Project, emphasizing the essence of tangible development initiatives in these regions.

The former President reiterated his commitment to fostering progress in the newly created regions if given the opportunity to lead the country again.

Mahama's remarks came as part of the ongoing "Building Ghana Tour" initiated by the NDC.

The tour aims to address public concerns and incorporate them into the party’s manifesto for the upcoming election.
