Lawyer Mohammed Tahiru Nambe has been defeated in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primary by Paul Alale Agobiri, a teacher and head of the mathematics department of Binduri Community Day Senior High.

Out of the 685 total votes, Paul Alale Agobiri beat Lawyer Mohammed Tahiru Nambe with a single vote to become the NPP Bawku central parliamentary candidate.

Lawyer Mohammed Tahiru, who had expressed confidence in his victory based on his track record, garnered only 175 votes.

Lawyer Mohammed Tahiru Nambe who appeared unhappy about the results called for a recount for the second time but did not favour him.

The confusion brought the electoral process to a halt for about 15 minutes. Lawyer Nambe and his agent challenged a ballot which was thumbprinted on Paul's face but small portion of the thumbprint crossed the line and extended to the next person. However, all stakeholders came together and agreed it was a valid vote for the teacher which saw him leading with one vote.

In his victory speech, Paul Alale Agobiri said he was thankful to everyone for the support.

Mr Agobiri called on his contenders, executives, party sympathisers, and the grassroots to come on board to wrestle power from Mahama Ayariga of the National Democratic Congress come December 7.

According to him, the NPP could win the seat with a united front.

Paul Alale Agobiri later paid a courtesy call on the President of Kusaug Traditional Council Bawku Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II to present himself as the parliamentary candidate for the NPP.

Naba Azoka II showered him with his blessing and wished him well in his campaign.

The rest of the contestants were Amadu Mogtar Zakary who polled 163 votes, Mahamud Issah Bayage 102 votes, Agbanwa Gabiana Abugri 33 votes and Salifu Bashiru 35 votes. The total votes cast was 685 with one rejected vote.
