Education Tyrone Marhguy: Journalist criticises 'misguided' trolling of Achimota SHS over brilliant Rastafarian student WASSCE results

Ghanaian journalist Paa Kwesi Schandorf has described as "completely misguided" attempts to ridicule Achimota School and others following the outstanding academic performance of one of its Rastafarian students, Tyrone Marhguy.

In a statement shared on X on Tuesday, December 19, Schandorf wrote: "The trolls are completely misguided!"

He said it is good to congratulate Marhguy for scoring eight As in the WASSCE "but we have to put the issues in context, and not use his success as grounds for throwing shades at people or stoking vitriol against Achimota School."

The journalist pointed out that when the controversy first erupted over Marhguy's admission denial due to his dreadlocks hairstyle, "there were absolutely no questions about his mental prowess" as anyone who interacted with him could attest to his brilliance.

Schandorf, who once hosted Marhguy on his television show, acknowledged admiring the student's "enormous intellectual prospects."

He noted that the only issue was Marhguy's refusal to conform to the school's dress code regarding hairstyles.

Therefore, "how does that make the school a subject of ridicule or trolling?"

Schandorf further stated: "In any case, did Achimota ever say his long hairstyle was going to affect his output in the classroom? For the records, Achimota actually put him on their National Science & Maths Quiz team..."

The journalist calls for the revision of obsolete rules.
