JUN 19, 2023 LISTEN

Dr Arif Alvi, the President of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, marked World Refugee Day with a powerful message acknowledging his nation's sustained efforts over the past 40 years to accommodate Afghan refugees. Celebrated annually on June 20th, the day highlights the trials endured by refugees and asserts a commitment to providing support during their challenging journeys.

Pakistan, despite its limited resources, has showcased an unparalleled humanitarian commitment by hosting one of the world's largest refugee populations. Dr Alvi praised the spirit of compassion and brotherhood exhibited by the Pakistani people and their government in welcoming Afghan refugees.

In the early years of the refugee crisis, Pakistan received significant financial aid and burden-sharing support from the international community. While these funds have dwindled over time, the commitment of Pakistan to the welfare and voluntary repatriation of refugees has remained unswerving.

President Alvi noted the extraordinary fact that, after four decades of hosting refugees, there have been no significant incidents or tensions between refugees and their host communities, demonstrating the harmonious coexistence and mutual respect that prevail.

Dr Alvi detailed Pakistan's policies to provide refugees access to essential services such as education and healthcare. In conjunction with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and other humanitarian agencies, Pakistan continues to offer critical assistance and protection to refugees within its borders.

Further, the President stated that refugees are also permitted to open bank accounts and avail of other opportunities that help them rebuild their lives with dignity. As part of these efforts, comprehensive educational programs have been implemented to provide quality schooling for refugee children.

Expressing his gratitude to all those involved in supporting refugees, including the UNHCR and other international organizations, President Alvi concluded his World Refugee Day message urging to uphold the values of compassion, empathy, and inclusivity that define Pakistan as a nation.
