The Brong Ahafo Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Obiri Boahen has registered his protest on what he has described as “a deliberate attempt” by the New Democrat, an NDC newspaper, “to tarnish the name of Vice President, Alhaji Aliu Mahama and cause religious conflict in the NPP”, by writing misleading stories about them.

The New Democrat newspaper, which is an NDC supporting newspaper widely suspected to be funded and edited by aides close to the NDC founder, has for time now been publishing defamatory articles on Vice President, Alhaji Aliu Mahama. Nana Obiri Boahen named the recent article of January 22, 2007 edition, which had the banner headline “Aliu Mahama Sacrificed” which alleged that the “NPP and the U.S pact would block any Moslem Presidency” as in very “bad taste” and “baseless”, which is willfully calculated to incite religious conflict.

The article, he said “also has the potency of creating an unnecessary tension between Moslems and the New Patriotic Party”..

He has therefore called on the National Media Commission (NMC) to investigate the publications of the New Democrat.
