The Ghana Police Service, headed by Dr. George Akufo Dampare, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), has taken the number one spot on Twitter over multiple factors.

According to netizens, the police force in the country can not be trusted for a couple of reasons, including the current shooting incidence at the Islamic SHS in Kumasi and the recent arrest of an officer who is alleged to be in possession of Indian hemp, as reported by the police on Tuesday, June 14, 2022.

Several concerns have been raised by Ghanaians as to whether the police force is trustworthy with evidence of the brutality at Ejura and that of Nkoranza after Mr. Donkor's death, as well as many others over the past eight months.

The concerns raised by the public include whether the police administrators use proper means in recruiting new officers to the police force and whether they adhere to their professional conduct.

Ghanaians are also concerned about the actions that have been taken against those officers who engage in those activities, endangering the lives of many citizens, some of them breadwinners for their families.

With regards to measures to cure the current police riot mishandling, many Ghanaians have suggested the officers should be given proper training on how they should be handling crowds amidst demonstrations and disturbances.

In addition to this, the three-member committee which was set up to look into the Ejura issue after the killing of one ‘Kaka’ and how the police handled the aftermath activities by the youths of the town suggested that all police officers who may be deployed to control disturbances should be made to wear body cameras, as well as their vehicles and other gadgets must also have cameras.

“All crowd/riot/crisis control units be made to wear bodycams and all vehicles and mobile gadgets employed must also have cameras,” portion of the statement by the Ejura three-member committee of inquiry reads.
