A Private Legal Practitioner and member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Nii Kpakpo Samoa Addo has said the party will challenge any attempt by the Electoral Commission to rig the 2020 polls.
Mr. Samoa Addo insists that every legitimate vote must be counted and declared.
According to him, when that is done, there wouldn’t be any disagreements over the declared results.
He further urged the Commission to respect the will of the Ghanaian people in the 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections.
“I think that we have a duty as citizens of this country to be vigilant. The whole idea and principle are that every legitimate vote must be counted and the votes that have been counted must be the votes that are declared and reflected.”
“Once that is done, everybody would abide because if every voters’ vote is counted and the result is properly collated and legitimately announced and you can see that this is the clear will of the Ghanaian people, nobody would have a problem but any attempt to manipulate the results and to make sure the will of the people is not reflected would be resisted.”
He made these comments on Citi TV and Citi FM’s weekend current affairs programme, The Big Issue on Saturday, November 21, 2020.
Mr. Samoa Addo spoke on the back of the EC’s assurance that it will announce election results 24 hours after polls close.
Speaking at an interaction with the Council of State on Friday, November 20, 2020, Chairperson of the EC, Jean Mensa said the Commission had introduced some measures which will facilitate the declaration of election results within 24 hours.
“We are promoting some efficiency into the system. We have worked with our numbers, and we have a duration within which the results should be transmitted.
“We are expecting that by the next day, we should be able to declare the results. We do not intend to go beyond 24 hours. And we are confident that God being our helper, because of the efficiency we have introduced into the processes, we should be able to declare results within 24 hours.”
