United Nations (United States) (AFP) - UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Thursday appointed a seasoned diplomat, Algerian Said Djinnit, to tackle one of Africa's most complex trouble spots, the Great Lakes region.
Djinnit replaces former Irish president Mary Robinson as special envoy after serving as the UN pointman for West Africa.
Fluent in Arabic, French and English, the 60-year-old diplomat has held several positions in the African Union including Commissioner for Peace and Security.
Djinnit arrives at the job after 11 countries signed an agreement in February 2013 on steps to bring peace to the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
The 20,000-strong MONUSCO peacekeeping mission in the DR Congo is among the UN's biggest.
