Thomas Partey has stressed that Ghana’s success against England in their 2026 FIFA World Cup Group L meeting will depend on teamwork rather than individual experience, as the Black Stars gear up for a defining test at Gillette Stadium.
Ghana take on England in their second group match, with anticipation building around a fixture that could shape their path in the tournament.
Speaking to 3Sports during a training session, the midfielder was asked whether his extensive experience in English football could offer Ghana an advantage against the Three Lions.
Partey, who spent five seasons at Arsenal after joining from Atlético Madrid in 2020 before later moving to Villarreal, downplayed the idea that familiarity with the Premier League alone could influence the outcome.
“I think I’m not the only one who played there. There are still players who are playing there, and I think it’s about the team, collective play,” Partey said. “We have to work on our way of play and try to compete with them.”
Now one of Ghana’s most seasoned international players, Partey has featured at multiple major tournaments, including the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
He missed Ghana’s opening win over Panama after being unable to enter Canada, but is expected to return for the high-profile clash.
He also brushed aside concerns about weather conditions, insisting the focus should remain firmly on performance.
“I think we train here, and I don’t wake up to check the weather, so we have to go there and enjoy. We are here to play. That’s what the World Cup is about. To compete and then give some joy to your country,” he explained.
Kick-off is scheduled for 20:00 GMT, with Ghana knowing that a positive result would significantly boost their chances of reaching the knockout stages.
Carlos Queiroz’s side will wrap up their Group L campaign against Croatia on June 27, as they target a return to the last 16 for the first time since 2010.
