Bush Fires

Analysis Bush Fires
JAN 19, 2019 LISTEN

I am the person of Azong Christopher, living in Siniensi Yangsa and attending Siniensi J.H.S. I am in form two and the assistant senior prefect of the school. I would like to speak about one critical problem affecting our society and it is bush fires.

I will talk about its causes, effects and solutions. Every day, especially in the dry season we see smoke and flames of fire in our bush. Destroying the plants and grasses. I always ask myself, why are we doing this? Where will our animals feed? Will the shear trees produce much shear nuts which is a source of income for us? Do we really care about our land?

Radio Builsa have been announcing the need to stop burning our bush, but why don’t we listen? Our cattle go far away and sometimes they get missing in search of food, yet we still burn down their food which keeps them away.

These bush fires are normally caused by people who smoke and then leave the leftover of the cigarette in the dry grasses without quenching the fire. Hunters also burn the bush in order to kill bush animals. Also, the Fulani headsmen also cause bush fires whenever the leave the fire on and go away after cooking. Some people also burn the bush with the intention of chasing away ghosts.

This problem of bush burning is affecting us a lot. All the wild animals in the bush are killed and others run far away. Our own animals do not get grass to graze, our soil loose its nutrients and we don’t get enough rainfall which affect our crop yield. If we do not stop this habit of burning the bush, a time will come when we will not get rain, we will not get enough harvest and we ourselves will suffer from hunger. Our land will be a desert and the weather conditions will be very harsh for us to live. Let us stop bush fires now before all these happen. I suggest the following solutions to end bush fires in the Builsa land.

First of all, anyone found of burning the bush, should be punished severely by the appropriate authorities to deter others from repeating it. We ourselves as future leaders should stop burning the bush.

Cigarettes smokers and Fulani headsmen should quench their fires after smoking or cooking, respectively. Hunters should not also burn the bush in the process of hunting. When we practice these, we will be able to solve the problem of bush fires together. I am Azong Christopher, thank you very much.

This article is written by Azong Christopher, a form three student and member of the Debate and Leadership Team of Siniensi J.H.S, during his JHS two days. The article was presented to her collegue students at school on 26th July, 2018. Christopher is currently in J.H.S 3. Christopher is saddened about the constant depletion of our forests through human activities and the less attentioned paid to its protection by citizens, especially in the northern part of the country. He therefore suggest ways of combating bush fires in order to restore the natural state of our forests.
