TESCON-KTU Condemns Barbaric Act Unleashed On Students By Police
CONDEMNATION OF THE BARBARIC ACT TOWARDS THE RESIDENTS OF UNIVERSAL HALL (KOFORIDUA TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY STUDENT) BY THE DISTRICT POLICE COMMAND
The Executive Council of TESCON-KTU Chapter will clutch this opportunity to denounce the barbaric, vicious, cruel and illegal act of the district police command, unleashed on residents of the Universal Hall on Thursday 13th December 2018 at 3:00am.
The way and manner the district police command (Koforidua) loomed this incident was very disheartening, in a country which prides itself as the pace setters of rule of law and democracy in our continent.
The district police command (Koforidua) abused the fundamental rights of the students which have been Hallowed in the 1992 Constitutional of Ghana Chapter five.
The council under no undefined terms can say the district police command (Koforidua) has not breached the fundamental human rights of the residents of the universal hall.
Chapter 5 article 15 of the 1992 constitution state that
(1) The dignity of all persons shall be inviolable.
(2) No person shall, whether or not he is arrested, restricted or retained, be subjected to
(a) torture or other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment;
(b) any other condition that detracts or is likely to detract from his dignity and worth as a human being.
*Chapter 5 article 14 clause two and three states that*
(2) A person who is arrested, restricted or detained shall be informed immediately, in a language that he understands, of the reasons for his arrest, restriction or detention and of his right to a lawyer of his choice.
(3) A person who is arrested, restricted or detained
(a) for the purpose of bringing him before a court in execution of an order of a court; or
On Thursday morning 3:00am a Full Armed Police Assailed and took on students who were preparing for their examination that morning.The Armed officers heartlessly detained the students for no crime committed, the police service did not consult the management of the School and the Hall after confirming that they were students of Koforidua Technical University.They were arrested like hardened criminals by the police and electrical shockers were also used on the students. Majority of them were in their boxers and some were bare chested when they were matched from their hall to the police station for about 30minutes drive to the district Police station at Gallaway.
The students were emotionally, mentally, physically and psychologically abused by the police officers. The police publicly embarrassed the students which has really affected their persona.
*According to the Chapter 5 Article 14 clause 5 of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana*
(5) A person who is unIawfully arrested, restricted or detained by any other person shall be entitled to compensation from that other person.
The Executive council will call on the District Police Command
(Koforidua) to compensate the student for an unIawfully arrest and restricted or detained by the police service.
We will use this opportunity to remember the Ghana Police Service of its core mandate

(3) The Police Service shall be equipped and maintained to perform its traditional role of maintaining law and order.
•To protect lives and property
•To ensure peace, stability and security in our country
Lastly We call on the Inspector General Of Police to set an inquiry Committee on the said matter and any officer who is found wanted must be brought to book. The executive council of Tescon ktu chapter will sympathize with the affected students of the hall and pledge their full support. Also we condemn the barbaric act and the unconstitutional way the district police (Koforidua) Handled the situation.
