TWO MEN, Evans Nkudede, a carpenter who is 27-years-old and Godsway Adzei, a photographer of Wegbe Kpalime, are in the grips of the Police for using fake Ghana cedi notes to transact business.
Volta Regional Police Commander, DCOP David Nennyi Ampah-Bennin who confirmed the incident to DAILY GUIDE at Ho last Friday, said the two will be arraigned before court as soon as investigations are completed.
DCOP Ampah-Bennin said Nkudede had earlier used a fake GH¢50 note to buy from a petty trader, where he was changed with original notes. However, when the trader took the money to the bank, she detected that the note was fake and was on the lookout for the suspect.
A few days later, Nkudede appeared again with another fake note but after taking hold of the money, the trader raised an alarm and he was arrested and handed over to the Police.
The Regional Commander said during interrogation, he admitted the offence and mentioned Adzei as the supplier of the fake cedi notes.
The Police immediately arrested Adzei, where he also admitted the offence and explained that he exchanged GH¢150 for GH¢200 in Accra but said he did not know the whereabouts of the one he exchanged the money with.
Adzei said when he returned to Kpalime, he contracted Nkudede to change the notes for him and he successfully changed GH¢100. Some days later, he (Adzei) gave Nkudede the rest of the money to go and change but Nkudede was unfortunately arrested.
DCOP Ampah-Bennin has therefore appealed to the public to examine cedi notes that are brought to them for transactions, especially notes of higher denominations, since some criminals who transact business with fake currency often come with higher denominations and buy very cheap items so that they would be changed with the original notes.
He warned that the law would not deal leniently with anyone who deals in fake currency and urged the public to alert the Police of such people. From Wise Donkor, Ho
