The Accra Metropolitan Assembly yesterday launched the second phase of the Accra Plastic Waste Management Project with the positioning of 6,400 plastic litter bins at vantage points throughout the Accra metropolis.

Areas to be covered under this phase are the Kwame Nkrumah Circle to Newtown, Kaneshie to Odorkor, Achimota to Lapaz and Shiashie to 37 Hospital.

The rest are Dansoman to Mamprobi, La to Osu, Danquah Circle to Newtown and from Danquah Circle to Kwame Nkrumah Circle.

Mr Ebo Botwe, Chairman of the Executive Implementing Committee (EIC) of the Accra Plastic Waste Management Project (APWMP), announced these at a press briefing on activities to be undertaken to achieve the project’s objectives.

He said the huge success of the first phase which was organised only in the Accra metropolis saw over 468 companies purchasing 1,141 permit stickers for their trucks.

It also involved the registration of 1,757 ice water sellers as well as a call by stakeholders, including water sachet producers, for the extension of the project to cover the whole of the Accra metropolis.

'Special guards in collaboration with the police ensured compliance in the central business district making it easier to arrest 110 persons and 273 defaulters,' he stressed.

Mr Botwe said the second phase will be extended to include other plastic products which were not covered in the first phase.

Special stickers, he said, will also be issued to mineral and filtered drinking water producers, alcoholic and non alcoholic beverage producers, ice cream and cocoa drink producers, bread and plastic shopping bags producers who do business in the metropolis.

He said, all these groups would be required to provide a business registration certificates, Ghana Standard Board / Food and Drugs Board certificates and full business addresses.

Mr Botwe said 300 special guards have been recruited to ensure that the law on indiscriminate refuse dumping and littering is complied with.

He warned that offenders will be prosecuted to serve as deterrent to others.
