AMA bans Aboboyaa from using inner lanes in Accras

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has directed operators of tricycles, popularly known as “Aboboyaa,” to stop using the inner lanes of roads across the capital as part of measures to improve road safety.

The directive is aimed at reducing accidents involving tricycles and ensuring safer movement for both operators and other road users.

Speaking to journalists, Accra Metropolitan Chief Executive Michael Kpakpo Allotey said Aboboyaa operators must use designated side roads whenever such routes are available.

He explained that where no side road exists, tricycle operators must use the outer lane and ensure that their vehicles are fitted with visible reflectors.

The Mayor also directed operators to wear reflective clothing to make themselves more visible, particularly during nighttime operations.

The AMA has given operators until the end of August 2026 to install reflector stickers on their tricycles. Those who fail to comply after the deadline will face sanctions.

“If there are highways and there's a side road, they must always use the side road. If there are no side roads, they must drive the outer lane, with reflectors on,” he said.

Mr Allotey urged Aboboyaa operators to comply with the directive before enforcement begins, stressing that the measures are intended to reduce road accidents and enhance the safety of all road users in Accra.
