The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) says it is working to restore full power supply after a major fault on the national transmission system caused widespread outages across the country.
The fault occurred at about 4:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 20, on the Akosombo-Volta transmission line.
According to GRIDCo, the incident triggered the automatic tripping of Akosombo generating units and some thermal generating plants as part of protection measures to safeguard the stability of the National Interconnected Transmission System.
“Immediately following the incident, GRIDCo engineers, working in close coordination with other power sector agencies, took steps to isolate the affected transmission line and commenced the safe and systematic restoration of the power system,” the company said in a statement.
GRIDCo said power supply had already been restored to some affected areas, with restoration efforts continuing to reconnect customers in the remaining affected areas.
The company said its technical teams had been fully mobilised and were working to achieve complete restoration of the power system.
“Power supply has already been restored to some affected areas, and restoration efforts are progressing steadily to ensure that supply is restored to all remaining affected customers as quickly and safely as possible,” GRIDCo said.
The company apologised for the inconvenience caused by the outage and urged the public to remain patient as engineers worked to restore the system.
