The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has attributed the power disruption in parts of the country to a major fault on the Akosombo-Volta transmission line.
The fault occurred at about 4:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 20, resulting in the automatic tripping of the Akosombo generating units and some thermal generating plants.
In a statement GRIDCo noted that the automatic tripping was triggered by the system's protection mechanisms to safeguard the integrity and stability of the National Interconnected Transmission System, leading to the loss of power supply in some parts of the country.
“Immediately following the incident, GRIDCo engineers, working in close coordination with other power sector agencies, took steps to isolate the affected transmission line and commenced the safe and systematic restoration of the power system,” the company said.
The company said power supply had already been restored to some affected areas, while restoration efforts were ongoing to reconnect all remaining affected customers.
GRIDCo said all relevant technical teams had been mobilised and were working with urgency to achieve complete restoration of the power system.
“Power supply has already been restored to some affected areas, and restoration efforts are progressing steadily to ensure that supply is restored to all remaining affected customers as quickly and safely as possible,” GRIDCo said.
The company apologised for the inconvenience caused by the temporary outage and appealed to the public for patience and cooperation as restoration efforts continued.
