University of Ghana suspends lectures as flooding forces students to stay indoors

The University of Ghana has suspended all lectures and directed students to remain indoors after torrential rains triggered widespread flooding across parts of Accra on Monday, disrupting movement and raising safety concerns.

In an emergency notice issued on June 29, the university advised students not to travel under any circumstances until weather conditions improve, stressing that their safety remains the institution's top priority.

Students were instructed to stay wherever they were at the time of the announcement, whether in their halls of residence, at home, or any other safe location, and avoid attempting to return to campus.

“Stay indoors wherever you are now; in your hall, at home or current location. Do not attempt to come for lectures or travel until the rains and flooding subside,” the notice stated.

The university announced that all academic activities have been suspended until further notice as authorities continue to monitor the situation.

The emergency directive was signed by the Director of the Academic Affairs Directorate (AAD), who urged members of the university community to exercise caution while the heavy rains continue to affect parts of the capital.

“KEEP SAFE!” the statement concluded.

The announcement comes as persistent rainfall has left several communities in Accra flooded, disrupting the morning commute, inundating major roads, and prompting emergency safety measures across parts of the city.
