The Member of Parliament for Yendi, Abdul-Fatawu Alhassan, has raised concerns over what he describes as increasing internal difficulties within the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).
He says emerging developments within the party are increasing tensions between key actors in both the party and government structures.
The concerns follow remarks by the NDC’s Deputy General Secretary, Mustapha Gbande, who noted that there appears to be a disconnect between the party leadership and the government.
He noted that some officials seem more focused on individual roles and ambitions than collective party cohesion after the party’s return to power.
Reacting to the situation on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana on Friday, May 15, Mr. Alhassan said the party is facing early signs of internal struggle driven by ambitions for leadership positions.
He explained that the current structure of governance and party administration seems to be creating competing centres of influence, particularly as some officials position themselves for future leadership contests.
“These are people who are warming up to be players in the field, yet currently they are also the referees. So, as a party, it is a difficult situation we find ourselves," he said.
Mr. Alhassan further noted that although political competition is normal, the situation is complicated by what he described as the lack of clear succession dynamics within the party.
This comes amid rumours that both the National Chairman of the ruling party Johnson Asiedu Nketiah and the Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, are currently working to be the next flagbearer of the party.
Meanwhile, opinion polls released by the Global InfoAnalytics also tips Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson and Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu as strong contenders.
However, none of the aforementioned names have officially confirmed or denied their interest in the party's flagbearer position for the 2028 general elections.
