The Eastern Regional Police Command has arrested three suspects in connection with the seizure of 1,600 parcels of suspected Indian hemp.
The incident occurred on Sunday May 10, following a tip-off about narcotics reportedly being stored at Akosombo-Bonya in the Eastern Region.
Police say officers from the Regional Police Intelligence Department (RPID) mounted surveillance near Krobo Girls Senior High School and intercepted a Hyundai Rhino truck with registration number GR 5724-15.
The vehicle was later tracked to a secluded area near Atua Government Hospital, where officers discovered suspects transferring sacks into a Howo Zonda tipper truck with registration number GN 7948-21.
According to the police, some suspects fled into a nearby bush, but the two vehicles and the suspected narcotics were successfully seized.
“On May 10, 2026, the Regional Police Intelligence Department (RPID) acted on a tip-off regarding narcotics stored in Akosombo-Bonya,” portions of a police statement dated May 11, read.
The police further explained that shortly after the seizure, one suspect, identified as Solomon Tettey, a 39-year-old welder, approached officers claiming ownership of the vehicles and the consignment, which he allegedly said was bound for Nigeria.
“In an attempt to compromise the investigation, suspect Solomon Tettey offered the officers a bribe of GH¢100,000,” the statement noted.
Police say the suspect transferred GH¢90,000 via mobile money and paid GH¢10,000 in cash, after which officers feigned interest to secure evidence of the bribery attempt.
He was subsequently arrested with the support of the Regional Counter-Terrorism Unit and Odumase Police.
Two additional suspects, Joshua Nartey and Teye Nartey, were later arrested after reporting to the Regional Headquarters.
According to the police, the suspects and exhibits have since been handed over to the Regional Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for further investigation.
