A 48-year-old woman has been mistakenly shot dead by a hunter at Okanease in the Krachi East Municipality of the Oti Region.
Mr George Yaw Gameli, Assembly Member for the Okanease Electoral Area, who confirmed the incident to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), said the tragedy occurred at about 0400 hours on Monday, May 4, 2026
He said the hunter, identified as Victor Gyamesi, reported that he fired after spotting what he believed to be the reflection of an animal's eyes during a hunting expedition.
According to him, the hunter later discovered he had shot Felicia Dutenya, a resident of the community.
Mr Gameli stated that he accompanied the suspect to the Katanga District Police Command to report the incident.
He said preliminary information indicated that Dutenya had gone to harvest mangoes near a hunting path used by the suspect.
Narrating the sudden incident to GNA, the deceased was carrying a silver pan, whose reflection may have been mistaken for the eyes of an animal.
He said the suspect is in police custody assisting investigations, while the body has been deposited at the Worawora Government Hospital morgue pending autopsy.
