The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has begun early works on the Accra–Kumasi Expressway project, clearing 17.75 kilometres of dense vegetation along the 175.6-kilometre right-of-way within weeks of starting operations.

Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson shared the update in a post on X on Tuesday, May 5, describing the progress as a strong start to one of the country’s flagship infrastructure projects.

He explained that four military work gangs are currently deployed and working around the clock from Asuboa near Akim Oda. The teams are operating under difficult weather conditions as they push to complete the initial phase within a 20-week schedule.

The proposed 198.7-kilometre, six-lane expressway is a key priority under President John Dramani Mahama’s administration. Once completed, it is expected to cut travel time between Accra and Kumasi from about six hours to roughly two hours.

The Finance Minister praised the personnel involved, urging them to maintain momentum and communicate any challenges quickly to ensure timely support. He assured that all necessary resources would be provided to keep the project on track.

Parliament has already approved the concession agreement for the project, with the Ministry of Roads and Highways acting as the contracting authority and Accra–Kumasi Expressway Limited serving as the concessionaire.

In November 2025, Mr. Forson also reaffirmed on the Citi Breakfast Show that government remains committed to completing the project within three years, despite public doubts about the timeline.

Senior military officials, including Chief of Defence Staff General William Agyapong, have inspected the site and commended the pace of work being carried out by troops.

He also cautioned the teams to ensure proper procedures are followed when dealing with farmlands and properties along the route, stressing that all affected areas must be duly assessed and approved by valuers before any demolition or clearance is carried out.
