Disaster NADMO provides relief for windstorm victims in Binduri
SAT, 02 MAY 2026

A severe windstorm struck Kuloko in the Binduri District of the Upper East Region on Friday, April 24, 2026, at about 7:00 p.m., leaving one person dead and 19 others injured.

The storm tore off roofs of houses and churches, affecting at least 150 residents.

Many victims have been displaced and are currently staying with neighbours and relatives as they recover from the impact of the disaster.

In response, the National Disaster Management Organisation led by the Upper East Regional Director, Akolgo Rebecca Hasmatu, has provided relief items to support affected households. The items include cartons of cooking oil, mosquito repellents, bags of rice, bags of beans, cartons of soap, and mattresses. NADMO has also started putting up tents to accommodate displaced families.

Akolgo Rebecca Hasmatu said the support provided cannot fully replace what victims have lost. She added that the Director General of NADMO, Major Rtd Dr Joseph Bikanyi Kuyon, is working to mobilise additional support from partner organisations to help re-roof damaged buildings.

An Assemblies of God pastor, Rev Francis Akurubilla, expressed appreciation to the Regional NADMO Director and the District Chief Executive for their quick response.

The District Chief Executive for Binduri, Martin Ariku, emphasised the need for stronger infrastructure and proactive disaster prevention measures to protect communities from such events. He commended the Volta River Authority and NEDCo for responding to damaged electricity poles but urged them to quickly remove hanging cables.

Mr Ariku also appealed to the youth in the district to maintain peace. He condemned the recent military attack and stressed that such incidents must not be repeated.

The NADMO team later visited the bereaved family and those injured to show support and present relief items.

Authorities have assured residents of continued assistance and further interventions to reduce the risk of similar disasters in the future.
