Communications Director of the United Party (UP), Solomon Owusu, has urged President John Dramani Mahama to dismiss the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng.
According to him, the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has become part of the corruption network in government and will continue to frustrate efforts to prosecute offenders and retrieve stolen public funds.
Speaking on Accra-based Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily show on Wednesday, October 22, Mr. Owusu said the government’s commitment to the anti-corruption fight would be questionable if Mr. Agyebeng remains in office.
“The earlier government sacks the OSP, the better. He is part of the cabal. It is either this administration has deliberately decided to also shortchange the people of this country, that is why they are keeping this OSP. But if they want to show Ghanaians that they mean business, then they must get him out,” he said.
His comments follow concerns raised by Deputy Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Justice Srem Sai, that his office is yet to receive the necessary dockets from the OSP to begin the extradition process of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.
Dr. Srem Sai explained that while the Attorney General’s Office is the only authority mandated to make an extradition request, the OSP has delayed in submitting the required investigative files.
Meanwhile, the OSP has clarified that it is nearing completion of investigations into Mr. Ofori-Atta’s case and will soon forward the docket to the Attorney General’s Office to enable the commencement of extradition proceedings.
