The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced a rerun of the election at the Abokobi Women's Development Centre 2 polling station in the Dome Kwabenya constituency following discrepancies in the collation of results.
This decision comes after collation was completed for 367 polling stations, leaving three results with unresolved issues. According to Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, Director of Training at the EC, the situation arose due to the use of incorrect materials for recording results at one polling station.
“The report from the returning officers indicated that collation for 367 polling stations was complete, with three results outstanding. When the three were brought in, one was rejected outright by the commission because it was declared on an incorrect statement of poll, specifically training sheets instead of the approved forms,” Dr. Quaicoe explained.
After validating the other two results, the margin between the two leading candidates stood at 165 votes. However, the rejected result involved 669 registered voters. Dr. Quaicoe noted that if all those votes were allocated to the trailing candidate, it would change the outcome, prompting the decision for a rerun.
“The polling station in question is Abokobi Women's Development Centre 2. The commission is preparing its report, and a date for the rerun will be announced soon. We assure all stakeholders that it will be conducted before the inauguration of MPs,” he stated.
The rerun is seen as pivotal in determining the final outcome of the Dome Kwabenya parliamentary race, which has been marked by controversy.
Earlier, Elikplim Akurugu of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) was declared the winner, flipping a seat previously considered a stronghold for the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Her victory, however, has been challenged by allegations of irregularities, including claims of tampered pink sheets and disruptions at the collation center by party supporters.
The upcoming rerun will likely bring clarity to the fiercely contested race and provide a definitive outcome for the Dome Kwabenya constituency.
