A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) communications team, Abass Nurudeen, has rejected claims that Ghana is experiencing dumsor.
His comments come at a time when Ghanaians are grappling with erratic electricity supply which is affecting homes, businesses and essential services.
The outages have been linked to a combination of factors, including transformer faults, transmission challenges and a recent fire outbreak at the GRIDCo Akosombo Substation which disrupted power supply.
However, speaking on Accra-based TV3’s New Day show on Wednesday, April 29, Mr. Nurudeen said the situation does not meet the threshold for dumsor.
“When we say dumsor, it is when there is an official load-shedding programme announced by the Electricity Company of Ghana. So far as ECG has not come out with a dumsor timetable, I don’t think there is dumsor,” he said.
He acknowledged that there are intermittent outages but noted that they are largely due to technical and system challenges rather than a generation deficit.
According to him, Ghana currently has sufficient installed capacity to meet demand.
The NDC communicator reiterated that the recent disruptions were triggered by factors such as transformer overloads and the temporary shutdown of some power units due to the inferno at Akosombo.
“What we are experiencing now is not as a result of a power generation deficit, but as a result of some difficulties in the system, as far as transmission and distribution is concerned,” he explained.
Mr. Nurudeen further noted that some of the affected power units are gradually being restored, which he says is already improving the supply situation in parts of the country.
He urged the public to remain patient as the relevant agencies work to address both the immediate challenges and long-term structural issues within the energy sector.
