Ghanaian cocoa farmers are now able to purchase more goods and basic necessities than they could in 2016 thanks to significantly higher farmgate prices under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, according to the Director of Communications for NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia's 2024 election campaign.
Dennis Miracles Aboagye wrote in a social media post on Monday, September 16, that the NPP has increased cocoa farmers' purchasing power by about 100% by more than doubling the farmgate price per bag of cocoa.
"In 2016, the NDC Government was giving the Cocoa farmers, GHc475 for a bag of Cocoa. Astonishingly, the Nana Akufo-Addo and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is giving the Cocoa farmer, GHc3,000 for the same bag of Cocoa in 2024," Miracles Aboagye wrote.
He added, "With this mind blowing price per bag, the Cocoa farmer is able to buy more bags of cement that they cld buy in 2016, more packets of roofing sheets, more bags of rice, more cartons of milk, more gallons of oil."
The ruling party’s communicator argued that "the Cocoa farmer today, in spite of the rise of prices of basic goods is still able to buy a lot more of these basic needs that they could in 2016 and that is the biggest difference a New Patriotic Party Government brings to bear."
Miracles Aboagye is urging Ghanaians to vote for Dr. Bawumia again in 2024 to "Upgrade this country as we seek to improve the lives of every Ghanaian everywhere."
This comes after the Producer Price Review Committee (PPRC) has announced an upward adjustment to the farmgate price of cocoa for the 2024/2025 cocoa season.
The regulator will now buy a tonne of cocoa for GH¢48,000 from GH¢33,120.00 and a bag for GH¢3,000 from GH¢2,070, effective September 11.
This represents an increase of 45% from the mid-season price adjustment announced in April 2024 and 129% higher than the price announced in September 2023.

Please, Aboagye, stop lying as if I am not around. Cocoa production is facing many challenges under the Akufo-Bawumia government, due to illegal mining, which has resulted in the reduction of its purchasing power by the European Union. Ghana is the second largest country in West Africa for the production of cocoa, if that claim is accurate, why has the economy never improved to to revive the depreciating local currency? This is what Ghanaians should expect from an illiterate who the NPP has give...
