The Ghana Police Service has revealed that extensive work is underway to ensure a safe and peaceful 2024 general elections slated for December 7.
Speaking at the launch of Asaase Radio's Election Nerve Centre coverage on Wednesday, July 31, ACP Victoria Yamoah of the Police Election Security Secretariat acknowledged that the country's democracy relies on how secured its electoral system is.
“Ghana’s democratic process relies on the integrity and security of its electoral system. When it comes to the security of elections, the police led by the IGP and other security services that constitute the national security taskforce have been doing a lot behind the scenes to ensure a successful election in December.”
“But of course it is not the election day that we are only looking at, a lot happens before during and after the election and the EC needs to be given the needed security to effectively discharge their duty,” Yamoah said.
There is growing concern ahead of the upcoming elections, which many observers say will be the most highly contested in recent years and could raise tensions if all sides do not maintain calm.
The ruling New Patriotic Party intends to remain in power and break the eight-year jinx of governance that has characterized Ghana's Fourth Republic.
However, the main opposition National Democratic Congress is poised to regain power and set the country back on the track of progress.
