Naphthalene balls flammable; keep away from fire, water, food, children – FDA warns public

Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has issued a warning to the public regarding the proper use of Naphthalene-containing products, which are registered as insecticides in Ghana.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, 4 June 2024, the FDA emphasised the importance of using these products strictly according to the instructions on their labels.

The FDA highlighted that labels on registered Naphthalene products in Ghana include critical warnings and cautions, such as the necessity to keep them away from children, food, water, and fire, due to their flammability.

The Authority has mandated specific labelling requirements for Naphthalene-containing products, ensuring they include detailed directions for use and proper storage instructions.

“In Ghana, the FDA has registered Naphthalene-containing products for use as insecticides. The FDA wishes to inform the public that labels on registered Naphthalene products in Ghana contain sufficient information on their proper use, warnings, and cautions," the statement indicated.

The FDA stressed the potential adverse effects of misuse but assured that following usage instructions carefully will ensure safe use.

“These products should not come into contact with children or food, including water, and as a flammable material, should be kept away from fire,” the FDA warned.

It therefore urged the public to adhere to the labeling instructions for Naphthalene-containing products and all other chemicals to safeguard their health and safety.

“The use of Naphthalene will remain safe if the usage instructions are carefully followed. However, misuse of the product contrary to the prescribed instructions could result in adverse effects,” the statement added.

The FDA also announced its intention to collaborate with relevant agencies to ensure the safe and sustained use of Naphthalene products in Ghana.
