West Africa's regional bloc ECOWAS has deployed a fact-finding mission to Togo ahead of crucial legislative and regional elections scheduled for April 29th.

The mission, approved by ECOWAS Commission President Omar Alieu Touray, will assess the pre-election environment and compliance with Community texts on democracy and good governance.

Led by former African Union representative to Mali and the Sahel Maman Sambo Sidikou, the team will be in Togo from April 15th to 20th.

In a statement, the ECOWAS Commission said the mission is "in conformity with the provisions of Article 12 of the 2001 ECOWAS Supplementary Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance."

During its visit, the delegation will meet with "the leadership of State institutions and agencies, political parties, the election management body, civil society organisations, the media, and partners."

The delegation will submit a report and recommendations to Touray, who will then make "appropriate decisions and action, including the deployment of an Election Observation Mission (EOM) for the legislative and regional elections."
