Former Ghana international Derek Boateng has revealed how close he came to a high-profile move to Real Madrid during his time at Getafe.
Boateng, who had joined the La Liga club from Bundesliga side FC Köln, quickly became a standout performer in Spain. Reflecting on that period, he recounted a moment that could have dramatically changed his career trajectory.
"During first year at Getafe (2010s), I was the MVP. I was the star in the team," he said.
The midfielder disclosed that former Real Madrid manager José Mourinho personally reached out to him.
"José Mourinho texted me and told me he wants Lassana Diarra out of Real Madrid so he could sign me, but I should keep it between himself and I," Boateng revealed.
"The text came when I was on my way to the bank. I could not even enter again, I was shocked."
The story underscores both the regard in which Mourinho held the Ghanaian and the fine margins that shape football careers, where a single message can alter history.
Ultimately, the transfer never happened, leaving fans to ponder what might have been if Boateng had joined Real Madrid at the peak of his powers.
During his stint at Getafe, Boateng made 77 appearances, scoring twice, before moving on to Ukrainian side FC Dnipro.
