Sunyani to Reclaim Cleanest City accolade – MCE
22.08.2017 LISTEN

Sunyani, the Brong-Ahafo Regional Capital, which was considered as the cleanest city in Ghana would soon reclaim its past glory.

The one-time cleanest city is gradually losing its enviable accolade to filth, silted gutters, massive congestion along streets and lanes, due to unauthorised kiosks, metal containers and hawkers who sell along the streets, and indiscriminate littering due to lack of dustbins at vantage places.Sunyani to

Another emerging challenge that is gradually affecting the beauty of Sunyani is the emergence of unapproved markets within the township.

The Sunyani Municipal Chief Executive, Mrs. Evelyn Ama Kumi-Richardson, at a Town Hall Meeting, disclosed that the time had come for Sunyani to improve upon its sanitation and decongest all the streets and lanes to reclaim its enviable accolade as the cleanest city in Ghana.

She said plans have been instituted to make sanitation a priority of the Municipal Assembly, alongside other development policies and programmes that would benefit the people.

According to Mrs. Kumi-Richardson, though such plans and policies might be impressive, it is imperative for the government and its functionaries to “carry along” with them the target beneficiaries and all other stakeholders of the programmes, hence the town hall meeting.

She called on chiefs and the people, as well as other stakeholders to support the move to tidy up Sunyani to reclaim its enviable accolade as the cleanest city in Ghana and even in the West Africa Sub-region.

The Municipal Chief Executive used the occasion to explain some government policies initiated to reduce poverty in the country.

Mrs. Kumi-Richardson indicated that, the Planting for Food and Jobs, planting for jobs and investment, One district One factory, the Zongo Development Fund, One Constituency One Million Dollars, the Free SHS Policy, Infrastructure for Poverty Eradication Program (IPEP), and National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Program were all means to help reduce poverty among the citizenry, which need to be supported by all, irrespective of one's political affiliation.

She said the town hall meeting is a mean to provide citizens the platform to get right responses and information to their concerns, thereby restoring their confidence in local governance.

“The Public sector in Ghana requires bold attempts to encourage citizens to participate not only in electronic media and elections but also in local governance activities, and to achieve this to the fullest, it is important the citizens are provided with the necessary education and information on all interventions of government,” She said.

According to Mrs Kumi-Richardson, the objective of organising the Town Hall Meetings across the 216 MMDAs is, therefore, to bring the entire nation up to speed on major Government Policies and programmes, and obtain feedback from the citizenry on the development and governance processes across the nation.

She said, Ghana since 1988 has adopted and is committed to decentralization as the surest way to achieve the duel benefits of increased participation of citizens in governance, as well as engendering stable and resilient local communities' development, assuring that participation and regular engagement of citizens in decision making will, therefore, be the hallmark of the democratic governance system.
