Education MTN Donates Over 5000 Thousand Books To Basic Schools Across Ghana

MTN Ghana, as part of its 21 Days of Y’ello Care staff volunteer programme, has donated over 5000 books to select schools across the country.

The books, which range from story books to dictionaries and Science, Math, Social Studies and English text books, were presented to St Francis of Assisi Primary & JHS in Sunyani, Bagabaga Demonstration School in Tamale, Community Special Vocational School in Kumasi, Presec and Kwashieman Cluster of schools in Accra, Tarkwa Cluster of Schools, Manford Cluster of Schools, Koforidua, Essikado Cluster of Schools and Demonstration Primary and JHS, Aburi.

In addition to the donation, MTN also organized reading clinics for pupils in the selected schools. Staff volunteers helped the pupils to read story books and answer questions on the books read. They also gave the pupils some lessons in phonetics to help build their reading skills.

MTN staff volunteers also extended their support to teachers by creating a resource center with teaching aids for teachers at Dzorwulu Special School, Garden City Special School and Wa School for the Blind. Upon completion, the resource centers will be used to provide capacity training for teachers in the selected special schools.

Commenting on the project, the Corporate Services Executive of MTN, Mrs. Cynthia Lumor, said, “these and other activities being undertaken by MTN volunteers is aimed at promoting reading at the basic school level. MTN continues to invest in education because we acknowledge education as one of the key areas that empower people to improve their living conditions.”

In line with the theme for the 21 Days of Y’ello Care, “Investing in Education for All”, MTN staff volunteers have embarked on projects aimed at promoting education and inculcating Information and Communications Technology (ICT) into teaching and learning to help bridge the digital divide. MTN volunteers will make available online supplementary reading materials for La Nativity Presby Basic School, Ridge JHS in Tamale, Adako Jachie MA Primary School in Kumasi, Anafo Bisi Primary JHS in Bongo, Aggrey Memorial SHS in Cape Coast and Baaglo Binen JHS in the Volta region.

MTN Ghana launched the 10th edition of its annual 21 Days of Y’ello Care employee volunteer initiative which takes place every June on the 5th of June 2017. During this period, MTN employees devote their time and resources to assist communities to embark on significant development projects.
