The politics of insults and intolerance appear to be gaining ground in Ghana's fourth Republican democratic dispensation. It will erode the Democratic gains chalked. This canker is a threat is a threat to our Democratic consolidation. Since the inception of the fourth republic and political democracy, Ghana's political activities and debates have been characterized by invectives with insults and abusive languages. Civil debates of policy are rarity in Ghana. Critical examinations of these insults are so violently provocative, demeaning and some laced with ethnocentrism.
The media as a matter of fact has lost focus as vibrant agent for national cohesion and development and has open up and resorted to hyping these insults in the name of freedom of speech and expression. This has created deeper emotional sentiments and sensations which may soon explode if not managed.the proliferation of radio station, the nature and kind of language heard and reported on radio, insinuating propaganda, the extent of libel, sedition and slander are part of this canker.
The nature of these insults got to its lowest ebb, when two presidents (now former) openly engaged in verbal insults on the media. Agyekum Kuffour referred to Jerry john rawlings as "sasabonsam " which means - devil. Jerry john rawlings replied by comparing kuffour to a notorious armed robber, one Ata Ayi, now serving a life sentence for his criminal activities. There are several instances where public office holders engage in this kind of act. One of the saddest news is that most of these insults are traded by the NPP and NDC, the two main political parties ( who have alternated power since 1992).Politics of insults are due to lack of self preservation, our ignorance of the beauty of the political atmosphere and the fear of being dislodged by a powerful entity if not obliged and adhered to instructions. I believe some of us if not all of us are aligned on basis of partisanship.. We can create an era of political excellence if we embrace the code and conduct of good behaviour and attach ourselves to the ideals of democracy...
I urge all and sundry devoid of partisan approach, come together as concerned citizens and put a stop to these insults in our body politik and help consolidate the country's democracy.
Lets prove to the world as Africa's beacon of democratic freedom and political excellence...........
