Jordan Ayew’s Tactical Value: Why Ghana’s Veteran Forward Was Key Against Panama8

Accra, June 16, 2026 — Ghana’s 1-0 victory over Panama in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup was not built on flowing football or midfield dominance. Instead, the Black Stars adopted a more pragmatic approach, defending deep and relying on direct balls to bypass Panama’s pressing game.

At the center of that strategy was Jordan Ayew, whose contribution went far beyond goals and highlights.

Ghana Forced Into a Direct Approach
From the opening stages, Ghana struggled to establish control through midfielders Elisha Owusu and Caleb Yirenkyi. Panama’s aggressive pressing disrupted the Black Stars’ build-up play, leaving little room for intricate passing sequences.

With central spaces closed, Ghana increasingly turned to long balls aimed at Ayew. It was a departure from the style many fans associate with the Black Stars, but one dictated by the demands of the game.

The Importance of Hold-Up Play
Ayew’s assignment was not primarily to score. His role was to act as a target man and an outlet whenever Ghana came under pressure.

The 34-year-old was tasked with challenging for aerial balls, shielding possession with his back to goal and drawing fouls to relieve pressure. Match statistics showed he won eight aerial duels, the highest by any Ghanaian player in the game.

Those moments allowed Ghana’s defenders to regroup and gave support players time to move up the field. What some supporters interpreted as holding onto the ball too long was often a calculated effort to wait for teammates to join the attack.

Hold-up play is one of football’s least glamorous roles. It requires physical sacrifice, constant battles with defenders and a willingness to put the team’s structure ahead of personal statistics. Against Panama, Ayew embraced that responsibility.

A Role That Changes With the Match
Players like Ayew provide tactical flexibility. When a team is under pressure, they offer a reliable outlet for long passes. When protecting a lead, they help slow the tempo by winning fouls and maintaining possession.

Their work also creates opportunities for quicker attacking players. As Panama’s defenders became increasingly occupied by Ayew’s physical presence, spaces began to appear for substitutes such as Kamaldeen Sulemana and Ernest Nuamah.

Ghana’s winning goal came after Panama’s defensive line had started to retreat, a consequence of more than 70 minutes of physical battles. It was a role reminiscent of Olivier Giroud’s contribution to France’s 2018 World Cup triumph and Mario Mandžukić’s influence for Croatia during the same tournament—players whose impact often extended beyond goals.

Experience Over Pace
Although Ayew no longer possesses the speed that defined his younger years, his experience and football intelligence remain valuable assets.

He understands when to slow the game, when to drag defenders into uncomfortable areas and where to position himself to receive difficult passes. Such details rarely make highlight reels but often prove decisive in tournament football.

His broader contribution to the national team is equally significant. According to Ghana Football Association data, Ayew recorded seven goals and seven assists during the World Cup qualifying campaign, the highest combined total in the squad. Between 2024 and 2026, he amassed 14 goals and eight assists in 25 appearances for the Black Stars.

Balancing Expectations With Reality
Much of the criticism directed at Ayew stems from expectations that forwards should provide pace and goals. Ghanaian supporters traditionally favour direct and exciting wing play, but tournament football often requires patience, discipline and game management.

Ayew’s limitations—particularly his reduced pace and occasional delayed passing—are evident. Yet his strengths, including aerial ability, ball retention and his capacity to bring structure under pressure, remain important.

The decision by coach Carlos Queiroz to keep him on the field for most of the match suggested that the technical team believed he was fulfilling his tactical responsibilities effectively.

More Than Just Goals
Jordan Ayew may no longer be Ghana’s most explosive attacking weapon, but he remains an important component of the Black Stars’ tactical setup.

When midfield control breaks down, when opponents press aggressively and when matches need to be managed rather than chased, the veteran forward offers solutions.

Speed creates chances, but control often determines survival. Against Panama, Jordan Ayew provided that control—and in doing so, played a crucial role in Ghana’s winning start to the World Cup.
