The National Democratic Congress (NDC), in partnership with the J.J. Rawlings Foundation, has announced a series of activities to commemorate the 79th birthday of its founder, former President Flt Lt Jerry John Rawlings.
As part of the celebration, the party will officially rename its national headquarters in honour of the late statesman and unveil a bust in his memory on Monday, June 22, 2026.
The commemorative events, themed “From Revolution to Fourth Republic: The Rawlings Legacy,” are aimed at reflecting on Rawlings' contributions to Ghana's democratic governance and national development.
According to a statement issued by the NDC's Deputy National Communications Officer, Godwin Ako Gunn, the day's activities will begin at 9:00 a.m. with the renaming of the party headquarters and the unveiling of the bust.
President John Dramani Mahama is expected to lead the event and deliver an address, alongside other senior figures of the party.
Later in the day, a public lecture and exhibition will be held at the auditorium of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences in Accra, starting at 4:00 p.m.
The lecture will feature prominent lawyer and academic Tsatsu Tsikata as keynote speaker. Other speakers include former Local Government Minister and current Ghana Investment Promotion Centre Board Chairman, Dr Akwasi Opong-Fosu, as well as former Information and National Security Minister, Kofi Totobi Quakyi.
Organisers say the activities are intended to celebrate the life, ideals and political legacy of Rawlings, whose role in Ghana's transition to constitutional rule continues to shape national discourse.
The NDC and the J.J. Rawlings Foundation have extended an invitation to party members, supporters, cadres and the general public to participate in the events and pay tribute to the former President.
