Disaster Sad Story In Somanya; Heavy Rainfall Destroys Many Houses And Shops
JUN 23, 2015 LISTEN

Tuesday June 23, 2015, Somanya: The Kloma Hengme Association; a Krobo advocacy and Heritage association, is calling for support and relief items from individuals and government for residents whose houses and shops have been destroyed in Somanya in last Saturday's rainfall disaster.

A heavy rainfall which lasted for about 5 hours on Saturday with strong wind blows and thunderstorms destroyed at least 22 houses and a drinking spot at Gbekormanya and Okperpiem (off the Akuse road), surburbs of Somanya.

The heavy rainfall and the severe abrasive winds removed the roofings of the affected houses and deposited them at distances. The rain water then entered the rooms and houses destroying valuables and household items of the affected houses.

An 85 year old landlady; Beatrice Damekie, told Kloma Hengme when the association visited the area that she has never seen such a heavy rainfall in Somanya throughout her years on earth. She continued "My house containing 9 rooms have been completely ravaged down. Yesterday we were all swimming in water in this house. Everything in this house have been destroyed. Last night, we have to visit houses in the neighbourhood to spend the night there".

A popular drinking spot in the area by name "Anadjo Yerder" was also completely ravaged down injuring many customers who were in the spot at the time.

Owner of the drinking spot; Samuel Owusu who is married with four children, also told Kloma Hengme he has now become jobless after he has lost all the drinks, deep freezer and other assorted items from his shop. He told the Kloma Hengme Chairman, Isaac Tamatey Otu, that "All the drinks on the shelves, in the deep freezer, and everything in the shop have been ravaged down. I don't even know how I am going to feed my wife and children, my life has come to an end"

It took the timely intervention of the Electricity Company of Ghana to off the lights in Somanya to avert possible fire outbreak as the Electrical wires were cut down into pieces by the roofing sheets that were volleying in the air.

There were however no casualties after the heavy rains but some residents sustained various degrees of injuries and were rushed to the Atua Government hospital for medication.

The Kloma Hengme association is therefore calling on government, the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), benevolent individuals, NGOs, and philanthropist to donate roofing sheets, woods and other relief items to the victims of the affected houses.
