A 39-year-old teacher accused of assaulting a student at Nyinahin in the Ashanti Region has been re-arraigned before the Nyinahin District Court.

The accused, Eric Apaflo Buernortey, pleaded not guilty to the charge of assault when he appeared before the court on Friday.

This marks the second time he has been brought before the court over the incident, which allegedly occurred on June 8, 2026. He was initially arraigned shortly after the incident, but the case was later withdrawn by the police, leading to his discharge.

Presiding over the case, relieving judge Lord Delvin Essandoh granted the accused bail in the sum of GH¢80,000 with three sureties, all of whom must be residents within the court's jurisdiction.

The court also ordered Mr Buernortey to report to the case investigator every two weeks on Mondays until the matter is concluded.

Additionally, the court cautioned the public against circulating misinformation about the case, warning that any attempt to misrepresent the proceedings would not be tolerated.

Presenting the facts, Chief Inspector Eric Owusu told the court that the complainant, Patricia Chibu, is an 18-year-old final-year student of Nyinahin Catholic Senior High School, where the accused is a teacher. Mr Buernortey also serves as the caretaker of the nearby Adusei Hostel.

According to the prosecution, the incident occurred at about 12:00 noon on June 8, when the accused confronted the complainant and other male students staying at the hostel over alleged misconduct.

The prosecution alleged that during the confrontation, the complainant insulted and mocked the teacher, provoking him.

Mr Buernortey is alleged to have assaulted the student following the exchange.

The prosecution further stated that the complainant subsequently called some residents to the scene, who allegedly attempted to lynch the teacher. However, a police patrol team intervened promptly, rescued the accused and escorted both parties to the police station.

The complainant was issued with a police medical report form and later returned it after receiving treatment from a medical officer.

Following investigations, the accused was detained and a caution statement was taken from him before he was formally charged.
