The Presidency has confirmed that two Deputy Chairpersons of the Electoral Commission (EC) are leaving office.

According to the Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Dr. Bossman Asare has submitted his resignation and will officially leave office on July 31, while Samuel Tettey has proceeded on retirement.

"Regarding Dr Bossman Asare, I can also confirm that he has submitted a letter to His Excellency the President, indicating that effective 31st July 2026 he would resign his position as Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission," the minister announced during a briefing on Monday, June 15.

He explained that Dr. Asare's decision was motivated by his desire to return to academia and continue his career at the University of Ghana.

According to the minister, the outgoing deputy chairperson also expressed appreciation to the President and the people of Ghana for the opportunity to serve in the role.

The government spokesperson further disclosed that Samuel Tettey, who also serves as a Deputy Chairperson of the Commission in charge of Corporate Services, has retired from office.

"We are also aware that the second chairperson in the person of Mister Samuel Tettey has also gone on retirement and in that regard processes are underway. Indeed, the Council of State has already been given a nominee, which they are considering," he said.

He added that an announcement on Mr. Tettey's replacement would be made once consultations and constitutional processes involving the Council of State are completed.

The minister indicated that a separate process would also be initiated to appoint a successor to Dr. Asare after his resignation takes effect at the end of July.

The EC is currently chaired by Jean Mensa, with Dr. Bossman Asare and Samuel Tettey serving as her deputies until the recent development.

Bossman Asare should have resigned long ago; Ghanaians still don't understand what he was waiting for. In this new government, discipline and accountability are not optional; they are the foundation of public service. Jean Mensa, too, has serious questions to answer about the electoral irregularities and the tragic deaths that occurred under her leadership. Until these matters are addressed openly and honestly, the wounds from those elections will never fully heal.
