Financial analyst Senyo Hosi has urged the government to move beyond macroeconomic stability and focus on driving productivity through private sector-led growth following Ghana’s exit from the IMF Extended Credit Facility Programme.

According to him, the country must now concentrate on creating an enabling environment for businesses, particularly small and medium enterprises (SMEs), to thrive and contribute meaningfully to economic transformation.

Speaking on The Big Issue on Channel One TV on Saturday, May 16, 2026, Mr Hosi said the gains made under the IMF programme should serve as a foundation for industrial expansion and sustainable economic growth.

“We need to move from macro-level stability to micro-level productivity, which will be driven by the private sector,” he stated.

He stressed that improving the productivity of SMEs would be crucial in creating jobs, expanding local industries and strengthening the economy.

“All we need is an enabling environment to catalyse the level of productivity we need. The SMEs' ability to be productive will be critical,” he added.

Mr Hosi also called on the government to unlock Ghana’s natural resources and develop new supply chains capable of diversifying the economy.

He specifically highlighted the country’s untapped bauxite reserves and the huge opportunities within the aluminium industry.

“We need to unlock our bauxite. We have still not done that. When we do, it will create a whole new supply chain and help us diversify and transform our economy,” he said.

He noted that Ghana possesses enormous potential in aluminium production and related industries, which could significantly boost industrialisation and employment if properly harnessed.

“Aluminium and its related products are just enormous. We have almost everything. We need to unlock what we have to create opportunities for our people,” he stated.

Mr Hosi further urged the government to improve infrastructure and reduce the cost of doing business to support private sector expansion and competitiveness.

“The government also needs to unlock infrastructure and the cost of doing business,” he added.
