The Eastern Regional Police Command has arrested three suspects following an intelligence-led operation that uncovered a large quantity of suspected narcotics and an alleged GH¢100,000 bribery attempt.
According to a press release issued by the Public Affairs Unit of the Regional Police Headquarters in Koforidua on May 11, 2026, the operation led to the seizure of 1,600 parcels of suspected Indian hemp.
Police disclosed that on May 10, 2026, officers from the Regional Police Intelligence Department (RPID) acted on a tip-off about narcotics being stored at Akosombo-Bonya. During surveillance near Krobo Girls Senior High School, officers intercepted a Hyundai Rhino truck with registration number GR 5724-15 and tracked it to a secluded area near Atua Government Hospital.
The statement explained that officers moved in while suspects were allegedly transferring sacks from the Hyundai truck into a Howo Zonda tipper truck with registration number GN 7948-21. Although the initial group reportedly fled into the bush, police secured both vehicles and the cargo.
Shortly after the seizure, a 39-year-old welder identified as Solomon Tettey, a resident of Atua, reportedly approached officers and claimed ownership of the vehicles and the suspected narcotics consignment, which he allegedly stated was destined for Nigeria.
Police further alleged that in an attempt to compromise investigations, Solomon Tettey offered officers a bribe of GH¢100,000. Officers reportedly pretended to accept the offer in order to secure evidence. The suspect allegedly transferred GH¢90,000 through Mobile Money and provided an additional GH¢10,000 in cash.
Following receipt of the money, police officers, with support from the Regional Counter-Terrorism Unit (CTU) and Odumase Police, arrested Solomon Tettey. Two other suspects, identified as Joshua Nartey and Teye Nartey, were later apprehended after presenting themselves at the Regional Headquarters.
The suspects and all exhibits have since been handed over to the Regional Criminal Investigation Department (RCID) for further investigations and possible prosecution.
The Ghana Police Service reaffirmed its commitment to integrity and its continuous efforts to combat drug trafficking activities within the region.
