A Historic Opening in the Heart of Africa
The inaugural Africa Forward Summit, co-hosted by Kenya and France, has kicked off in Nairobi on May 11–12, 2026, bringing together Heads of State, business leaders, and innovators to forge a new partnership built on equal ground.
Kenya has made history as the first non-Francophone African nation to host the Africa-France Summit. The event, which has previously been held exclusively in France or Francophone African countries since its inception in 1973, has now broken tradition in a bold diplomatic move by Presidents William Ruto and Emmanuel Macron.
Dignitaries Arrive in Nairobi
Dignitaries from across Africa and beyond began arriving in Nairobi ahead of the much-anticipated summit. On Sunday, Sierra Leone President Julius Maada Bio landed at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, becoming one of the first leaders to arrive. Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano, leading the government's reception arrangements, received him. More than 30 Heads of State, innovators, and business leaders are expected for the high-level discussions on the continent's future.
Words from the Co-Hosts
President Ruto set a warm and ambitious tone, saying: "It is my distinct honour to warmly welcome you to Nairobi, Kenya, for the inaugural Africa Forward Summit. Kenya, the cradle of humankind, is proud to host you once again on African soil a place where history began, and where the future is being actively shaped." (The Star)
French President Macron underscored the significance of the summit, stating: "Since 2017, we have been working on overhauling the Africa–France relationship. We wish to build partnerships on an equal footing, founded on shared interests and tangible results. This summit will bring together States, businesses, young people, artists and diasporas because the relationship between France and Africa cannot merely be declared, it must be built on the ground by innovators, entrepreneurs, and creative’s."
Two Days, Two Tracks
May 11's theme is "Inspire and Connect," beginning with a Business Forum highlighting the breadth of France-Africa economic partnerships, with special events focused on young people and sectors that generate jobs, including sports and cultural and creative industries. May 12 is devoted to development finance and global issues, with youth employment and training, sovereignty and competitiveness at the core of discussions.
The Business Forum on May 11 will take place at the University of Nairobi, connecting investors, innovators, and policy actors. On May 12, leaders will gather at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) for the Heads of State Summit to discuss policy direction and partnership frameworks. Around 30 chief executives from Africa and France will participate alongside civil society groups and youth leaders.
What Is on the Table?
The Africa Forward Summit is primarily focused on economic issues, including reform of the international financial architecture, the energy transition, green industrialization, the blue economy, artificial intelligence, and digital technologies. The private sector, civil society, and diaspora play a key role in renewing the relationship between the African continent and France.
The summit aims to strengthen Africa–France relations through practical cooperation, deepen economic partnerships, unlock investment into viable projects, expand digital innovation and start-up ecosystems, promote green industrialization, improve food security through sustainable agricultural systems, and strengthen health systems, vaccine production, and regional stability. Why
This Summit Is Different
The Africa Forward Summit is a milestone in relations between France and the African continent, nearly ten years after French President Macron's landmark speech in Ouagadougou. This is the first summit of its kind to be hosted and co-chaired with an English-speaking African country, reflecting robust and balanced partnerships built in support of each country's economic development.
President Macron was clear about the political message behind the summit: "Africa must be fully involved in global decisions. Peace, climate, technology and prosperity none of these challenges can be addressed without it." Looking Beyond Nairobi
Certain conclusions of the Africa Forward Summit will provide substance for preparations of the G7 Summit, which France will host in Evian from June 15 to 17, 2026 meaning the outcomes of Nairobi will echo into the highest corridors of global power.
For Africa, this summit represents more than a diplomatic gathering. It is a statement that the continent is no longer just a recipient of aid and policy it is a full partner, a driver of innovation, and a shaper of the world's future.
Nairobi has spoken. Africa is moving forward.
