Nigeria–US Security Ties Deepen as NSA Nuhu Ribadu Meets VP Vance and Secretary of State Rubio in Washington

Nigeria–US Security Ties Deepen as NSA Nuhu Ribadu Meets VP Vance and Secretary of State Rubio in Washington

A High-Stakes Visit to Washington
Nigeria's National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, undertook a three-day working visit to the United States from May 4 to May 6, during which he held a series of high-level engagements with senior officials of the U.S. government. He conveyed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's strong commitment to

Nigeria's longstanding strategic partnership with the United States.
The meeting with Vice President J.D. Vance took place at the residence of the Vice President a sign of the significance both sides attached to the visit.

Who Did Ribadu Meet?
Ribadu met with US Vice President J.D. Vance, the Acting National Security Advisor and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the Undersecretary for Political Affairs Allison Hooker, and Assistant Secretary of War Daniel Zimmerim. The meetings provided an opportunity for both sides to review the current state of Nigeria–United States relations and to further strengthen ongoing collaboration in counterterrorism, defence cooperation, intelligence sharing, regional security, economic resilience, and democratic governance.

The Core Agenda: Fighting Terrorism in West Africa
The discussions centered on reinforcing a decisive U.S.-Nigeria partnership to confront terrorism in West Africa. Nigeria, as Africa's largest democracy, was described as a frontline U.S. partner against ISIS, Boko Haram, and rising terror threats across the Sahel.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was noted as being appreciative of the support provided by the United States government under President Donald Trump, with U.S. assistance in intelligence and military training continuing to support Nigerian security forces in ongoing operations against insurgent groups.

Strengthening the Nigeria–US Joint Working Group
During his meeting with Hooker at the State Department, Ribadu expressed Nigeria's appreciation for continued US support in security assistance, intelligence collaboration, defence capacity building, and counterterrorism operations. He reaffirmed Nigeria's commitment to implementing the agreed roadmap under the Nigeria–US Joint Working Group (JWG), established to advance structured bilateral cooperation on strategic and security matters.

Both sides reviewed progress under the JWG framework and discussed practical measures to enhance implementation of agreed initiatives, including intelligence sharing, military cooperation, counterterrorism support, border security, strategic communications, and capacity development for Nigerian security institutions. The discussions also highlighted the importance of maintaining regular channels of communication and strengthening institutional coordination between the two countries to address common security challenges.

Nigeria's Role in the Sahel
Ribadu emphasized the importance of sustained cooperation in addressing emerging security challenges confronting West Africa and the broader Sahel region, particularly terrorism, violent extremism, transnational organised crime, and cyber threats. The NSA noted that Nigeria remains fully committed to working with international partners in promoting peace, stability, democratic governance, and economic development across Africa. He further underscored Nigeria's role as a regional leader and frontline state in counterterrorism efforts across the Lake Chad Basin and West Africa.

The Takeaway
This visit marks a significant moment in Nigeria–US relations, signaling that both countries are doubling down on their security partnership at a time when West Africa and the Sahel face growing instability. With Boko Haram, ISIS-linked groups, and transnational crime continuing to threaten the region, the Ribadu–Vance–Rubio meetings send a clear message: this fight is winnable and together the US and Nigeria intend to finish it.
