BECE 2026: No candidate was denied the opportunity to write — WAEC

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has stated that all candidates who registered for the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) were able to sit for the ongoing exams.

According to the Council, it has not recorded any incident where a registered candidate was prevented from writing the examination.

WAEC says it has successfully distributed all examination materials to the various centres across the country.

Speaking on Accra-based JoyNews on Friday, May 8, Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, John Kapi, said the Council has carried out its mandate in the interest of the public.

“We have the mandate to conduct examinations in the public interest, and that is what we've tried to do,” he said.

He added that all the required logistics and materials had been delivered to the examination centres to ensure a smooth process.

“Every candidate who has registered for the examination has had the opportunity to write. We haven't recorded any situations where candidates didn't have the opportunity to do so,” Mr. Kapi stated.

He, however, expressed concern about examination malpractice, particularly the conduct of some officials tasked with supervising candidates at the examination centres.

According to him, such behaviour continues to pose challenges to the credibility of the examination process.

Meanwhile, a total of 620,141 candidates from 20,395 schools across the country began the examination on Monday, May 4, and are expected to complete it on May 11.
