The Minority Caucus in Parliament has condemned the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, over her comment that recalcitrant public servants would be transferred to northern Ghana as punishment.
She made the remark on Tuesday, May 5, during a demolition exercise targeting illegal structures in Accra.
During an interview with the media, the Minister warned that officials who grant permits for developments in unauthorised areas could be posted to the North.
The comment has since sparked public backlash, with many describing it as insensitive and reinforcing negative perceptions about parts of the country.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Minority described the comment as divisive and contrary to national values.
“Let it be stated plainly: no part of the country is a disciplinary outpost. No region is a symbol of exile,” the statement read in part.
The caucus argued that such remarks undermine national unity and stigmatise communities.
“To frame any part of the nation as a punitive destination is to diminish its people, its potential, and its rightful place in the national story,” it noted.
The Minority further stressed that postings within the public service must be based on operational needs and professionalism, not used as punitive measures outside due process.
Meanwhile, the Minister has since apologised, describing her earlier comment as a slip in communication and clarifying that it does not reflect government policy on postings.
She also assured that administrative decisions, including transfers, are guided by established rules and procedures.
