Kennedy Osei Nyarko, Member of Parliament for Akim Swedru, has entered the ongoing debate over the dualisation of the Accra Kumasi Highway, stressing that the project should not be viewed through a partisan lens.

In a post on his Facebook wall, the MP said the road project goes beyond political party interests and criticised the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for what he described as years of inaction during their time in office.

According to Nyarko, “I get worried and disturbed when people start to ask questions why the NPP didn’t complete the dualisation of the Accra-Kumasi Highway, forgetting that this road transcends beyond the NPP. If there’s any government that should have completed this project, it is the NDC.”

He explained that the project has seen contributions from successive administrations, noting that it was started beyond Nsawam during the tenure of former President John Agyekum Kufuor and later extended under President Nana Akufo-Addo up to Apedwa Junction during his first term.

Nyarko further indicated that during Akufo-Addo’s second term, eight bypasses were constructed from Osino to Konongo as part of ongoing efforts to improve the highway network.

He also rejected suggestions that the project mainly serves New Patriotic Party strongholds, arguing that communities in the northern and Bono regions have benefited significantly. He added that “those who have benefited greatly from this road are probably the five northern regions, which are NDC strongholds, and the three Bono regions.”

The MP also criticised previous NDC administrations, claiming they did not demonstrate sufficient commitment to the project during their 18 years in power, which he said contributed to delays in its completion.

He concluded by urging the public to acknowledge the progress made so far and cautioned against what he described as attempts to misplace blame on the current administration and the New Patriotic Party New Patriotic Party.
