The Ghana Police Service has interdicted five of its personnel after viral videos circulating on social media allegedly showed them engaging in conduct deemed inappropriate and damaging to the image of the Service.
The affected officers are from different units, including the Osu Police Station, the National Protection Unit, and the Obuasi Police District.
In one of the said videos, a police officer is seen allegedly demanding bribe at an illegal mining site.
They have since been handed over to the Police Professional Standards Bureau for investigations.
In a statement issued on Monday, May 4, the law enforcement agency said the move is part of internal disciplinary processes aimed at maintaining order within the Service.
“The Ghana Police Service has interdicted five (5) personnel sighted in viral videos engaging in acts that tend to put the name of the Service into disrepute,” the statement read in part.
According to the release signed by Deputy Commissioner of Police and Director-General of Public Affairs, Grace Ansah-Akrofi, the officers include Chief Inspector Matthew Blay, Chief Inspector Francis Arthur, Inspector Eric Osei, Sergeant Amos Dery, and Inspector Joseph Okyere Asabre.
The Service stressed that investigations will be conducted in line with its internal disciplinary procedures to determine the appropriate action.
“The Ghana Police Service reiterates its commitment to professionalism, integrity, and accountability, and assures the public that appropriate action will be taken upon the conclusion of the investigation,” it added.
